When a child is born with a harmful condition, screening can reveal it and let appropriate treatment begin. For certain disorders, timely screening saves babies’ lives.

But securing access to these tests is a never-ending fight. Programs vary substantially from state to state, and funding to continue and expand them is constantly at stake.
